Starting Import or Export? Begin With Your IEC
The Importer Exporter Code is the first registration for anyone trading goods across borders. Here's how it works.
Business Registration
Importer Exporter Code from DGFT, needed to import or export goods.
Overview
The Importer Exporter Code (IEC) is a 10-character code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). It is generally required to import or export goods, and is used by customs and banks for cross-border transactions.
The IEC is linked to the PAN of the business and is applied for online on the DGFT portal. It does not expire, but it must be updated periodically — an IEC that is not updated can be deactivated.
An IEC is often the first step before registering with an export promotion council or with bodies such as APEDA.
