Under the Startup India initiative, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) recognises eligible entities as startups. Recognition is the gateway to several Startup India benefits.
Who can apply
Recognition is available to private limited companies, LLPs and registered partnership firms that meet age and turnover limits and are working towards innovation, development or improvement of products, processes or services — or have a scalable business model with potential for employment or wealth creation.
Benefits linked to recognition
- Self-certification under certain labour and environmental laws
- Support for patent and trademark applications
- Eligibility to apply for specific tax exemptions, subject to separate approval
- Access to Startup India programmes, challenges and networks
Each of these has its own rules. Recognition makes you eligible to apply; it does not automatically grant every benefit.
Making a strong application
The most important part of the application is explaining what is innovative about your work. Be specific: the problem, your solution, what makes it different, and evidence of progress such as a prototype, users or revenue.
