Anyone who manufactures, processes, stores, distributes or sells food in India needs to be registered or licensed under the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). There are three levels, and applying under the wrong one is a common mistake.
The three levels
- Basic registration — for small food businesses below the prescribed turnover limit
- State licence — for medium-sized businesses within a single state
- Central licence — for larger operations, importers, and businesses operating in multiple states or in certain categories
Which one applies depends on annual turnover, production capacity and the type of activity. The limits are set by FSSAI and can change, so check the current criteria for your category.
Who this covers
Manufacturers, traders, restaurants, cloud kitchens, caterers, packaged food brands, and online sellers of food all fall under FSSAI. Home-based food businesses selling to the public are covered too.
After you get it
Display your FSSAI number as required — including on packaging and food delivery listings — and track the validity period so you renew on time.
