ZED stands for Zero Defect, Zero Effect — producing goods with no defects and no adverse effect on the environment. The Ministry of MSME runs the MSME Sustainable (ZED) Certification scheme to encourage these practices among small businesses.
How the scheme is structured
Businesses start by taking the ZED pledge and can then apply for certification at Bronze, Silver or Gold level. Each level assesses a wider set of parameters, from quality and process control to energy use and waste.
Who can apply
The scheme is open to MSMEs registered on the Udyam portal. Support and benefits under the scheme are notified by the Ministry and can change, so check the current details on the official ZED portal.
Why consider it
- A structured way to improve quality and reduce waste
- A recognised credential when dealing with larger buyers
- A step towards other certifications as your systems mature
